Advancing cancer research means not only generating new scientific knowledge but also ensuring that discoveries can lead to real-world applications that benefit patients and society. IFOM is committed to bridging this gap by fostering collaborations and clinical trials, protecting intellectual property, and exploring pathways for innovation, making its research accessible beyond the academic sphere.
This commitment aligns with IFOM’s broader mission: driving scientific discoveries that enhance our understanding of cancer and translating them into solutions that improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment by continuously evaluating their translational potential.
To achieve this, IFOM actively promotes and supports collaborations and is willing to initiate new partnerships with stakeholders across the scientific and industrial landscape.
One of the key assets supporting this process is technology transfer, which helps identify and develop findings with potential industrial applications. IFOM’s dedicated Technology Transfer Office serves as a point of reference for both researchers and industrial partners, promoting translational opportunities, fostering innovation, and facilitating new collaborations.
Furthermore, IFOM’s Technology Transfer Office is an active member of PerfeTTO, the Italian network of Technology Transfer Offices in the Life Sciences, further strengthening its connections within the broader innovation ecosystem.
IFOM actively engages with its principal investigators and researchers to identify novel inventions arising from their scientific activities. The team collaborates with them to develop strategic plans and assess the market potential of these innovations, ensuring their feasibility for commercialization.
IFOM evaluates the patentability, market landscape, and competitive positioning of new inventions. It manages all aspects of Intellectual Property governance, including patent drafting, filing, prosecution, and oversight of IFOM’s patent portfolio. Additionally, the institute handles trademark and copyright registrations and reviews IP-related contractual provisions (e.g., NDAs, MTAs, IIAs, and licensing agreements).
IFOM identifies potential industrial partners through participation in major Life Sciences partnering events (e.g., BIO-Europe, BIO-Europe Spring, BioFIT/MedFIT). The team structures, negotiates, and finalizes research collaborations and licensing agreements while also supporting the creation of start-ups by connecting researchers with accelerator programs and venture capital funds.
IFOM fosters strong partnerships across both non-profit and for-profit sectors to drive research innovations to market. By collaborating strategically with the pharmaceutical industry and venture capital, IFOM helps accelerate the development and application of cutting-edge cancer research.
